Do carbs kill clarity?

When it comes to optimising cognitive performance, managing your Glycemic Load (GL - a number that represents how much food will raise your blood glucose levels) is very important – it is a very close second behind sleep.

After tracking cognitive performance 4 times daily for 2 weeks, people on a low GL diet significantly outperformed those on a high GL diet.

Compared to those on a low GL diet, those on a high GL diet:

· Recorded 15% lower average cognitive function

· Spent 78% less time on peak-form…

· …and 58% more time unable to think clearly
(average difference between top quartile vs bottom quartile GL)

THIS EQUATES TO A 60% REDUCTION IN COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE FOR 4 HOURS EVERY SINGLE DAY.🤯

What is even more staggering is that before starting our programme 47% of people already recognised they were significantly far from what they considered optimal and felt that it was important to do something about it now.

Optimising your diet for peak cognitive function is very personal depending on how your body has adapted, but in general the following principles should help:

1. Try not to consume too large a GL at any meal, especially lunch as when combined with the natural dip in your circadian rhythm, the aftereffects can be particularly energy sapping

2. Avoid sugary and high glycemic index foods as they will spike your blood glucose and create a subsequent rollercoaster for your body as it tries to maintain homeostasis

3. Develop a self-awareness of how different meals and snacks impact your mental clarity and energy in the minutes and hours afterward, and then adapt your eating habits taking into account their impact on your cognitive function
